The Association for the Prevention of Torture asked us to create an animation that conveyed the importance of implementing safeguards in the early hours of detention, and explained the benefits of using non-coercive interview techniques.
Research commissioned by the Association for the Prevention of Torture shows that detention standards and safeguards are the most effective way to protect people in the early hours of detention, when they face the greatest risk of torture and ill-treatment. We were asked to create an animation that conveyed the importance of implementing safeguards, and explained the benefits of using non-coercive interview techniques.
We produced a short animation for social media to raise awareness of the issue of interview safeguards, and show what non-coercive interrogation means in practice. The film transitions between two scenarios; one in which coercive interrogation methods are used, and another where the appropriate safeguards have been implemented. A dramatic use of light and symbolic imagery helps to tell an emotive story without showing any scenes of torture.
