Remembering Katrina 10 years on

Nice and Serious | One Minute for Katrina

Problem

Hurricane Katrina took the lives of over 1,800 people 10 years ago. It was one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in U.S. history. Yet often our busy lives don’t give us an opportunity to stop and reflect. We wanted to create something that would encourage people to pause and think about Katrina 10 years on.

Solution

We decided to create an animated minute of silence to commemorate the thousands who died and those still affected by the tragic event. Using 10 iconic images from the disaster, we designed a series of illustrations and created a surreal, calming animation to stop people in their tracks. We wanted to remove any distraction, so we kept the style and soundscape simple and reflective. We wanted people to remember.

Impact

We launched the animation the day before the 10th anniversary. We sent the animation to various memorial events in New Orleans, and shared the animation online to encourage others to take time and reflect.
